William Granville Phipps

1841-1933

 

Private, Company C, 45th Regiment Virginia Infantry and Company E, 30th Virginia Infantry.
Died at the Soldiers Home No.1 in Richmond buried in Hollywood Cemetery- Richmond, Virginia. He was number 117 until Marlene found him via research/visiting the cemetery. Marlene put up a stone of remembrance with his name and service to the Cause. He lies with many glorious men and women who gave their all for Southern Culture—privates and generals all here resting in peace. Hollywood Cemetery has a large Confederate section dominated by a 90-foot granite pyramid erected in 1869. It memorializes thousands of Confederate soldiers buried nearby, including about 2,000 killed at Gettysburg. Some 18,000 Confederates are buried at Hollywood Cemetery. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery are Jeb Stuart, two U.S. presidents (James Monroe and John Tyler), several Virginia governors, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis and nearly two dozen Confederate Generals.

James Newton McMinn

1827-1873

 

Private, Company H, 25th Infantry Regiment, North Carolina out of Henderson, North Carolina. Entered service July 15, 1861. He transferred to Company A, 25th NC Infantry Regiment, Edney’s Greys, on 11-28-1861 in exchange for George W. Davis. He was discharged 7-16-1862 under the provisions of the Conscription Act.

 

Archibald Ferguson

1841-1906

 

Private,  Company H, 46th Regiment, North Carolina Troops
Born in Moore County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Moore County at age 21 on March 11, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the forefinger at Wilderness, Virginia on May 5, 1864. Reported absent wounded through December 1864. Returned to duty sometime before March 25, 1865 when he was captured at or near Fort Stedman, Virginia Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until released June 8, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.

Simon Eckard

1833-1915

 

Sergeant, Company K, 46th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting March 13, 1862 at the age of 28. Mustered in as Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant on July 15, 1864. Present or accounted for through December, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. North Carolina pension records indicate that he was wounded in 1864.

George Washington Yount

1838-1919

 

Private, Company F, 38th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, October 31, 1861. Present or accounted for until he deserted on June 18, 1863. Returned to duty on or about September 25, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at or near Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 23-24, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Released on or about May 13, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

1st Lieutenant 2d Co. I, 38th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion North Carolina Infantry September 16, 1861. Captured at Roanoke Island, North Carolina February 8, 1862. Released on parole at Elizabeth City, North Carolina February 21, 1862. Resigned September 1862. Elected Captain of Co. B, 2nd Regiment Georgia State Guards Cavalry July 22, 1863 , term of service six months. Mustered out at camp near Rome, Georgia January 31, 1864. Elected Captain of Co. F, 9th Regiment Georgia Militia in 1864. Discharged at Macon, Georgia April 1865.

Pinkney Berry

1839-1925

 

1st Lieutenant, Company K, 35th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. Born in Burke County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 21, October 15, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal. Present or accounted for during January-April, 1862. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on October 13, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 5, 1863. Reported present during November, 1864-February, 1865. Captured at Five Forks, Virginia, April 1, 1865. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, April 9, 1865. Released at Johnson's Island on June 18, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. North Carolina pension records indicate he was wounded in the right elbow on June 17, 1863.  After the battle of New Bern, N. C, upon the death of Lieutenant Hale, Julius E. Link was elected Second Lieutenant At the battle of Malvern Hill, July 1st 1862, this gallant young officer was killed. Pinkney Berry was promoted from Sergeant to Second Lieutenant.

Hughey Yerby Frazier

1830-1865

 

Private Company E, 57th Infantry Regiment NC.  Enlisted April 1, 1863 at the age of 43. On rolls on 31 October 1863, POW on 07 November 1863 at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. Confined on 11 November 1863 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Hospitalized on 27 January 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland.  Died of disease while a POW Company E, 57th Infantry Regiment NC. on 04 February 1865 in Point Lookout, Maryland.

John B. Roffe

1826-1922

 

Private Company B 34th Virginia Infantry.  Enlisted February 4, 1863 at the age of 36 Mecklanburg County, Virginia.

Berry Hicks McSwain

1828-1864

 

Private Company D 55th Regiment "The Cleveland Farmers" North Carolina.  Enlisted February 20, 1863 Cleveland County, North Carolina. Died in the service on 30 April 1864. Buried Buffalo Baptist Cemetery, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

Warren Gray Turner

1837-1913

 

1st Lt. Company E 16th Regiment North Carolina.

Mr Turner taught school in Burke for several years before enlisting in the War Between the States. He was a 2nd Lieutenant of Co E, 16th NC Regiment, and proved a gallant, brave soldier. At the Battle of Gettysburg, he was taken prisoner and removed to Johnson's Island, where he remained ten months. He was twice wounded. While imprisoned in Ohio, he met the spy Belle Boyd, and was so impressed by her that he named his first daughter Belle Boyd Turner, He was a merchant in Morganton for many years after the war, and was postmaster during the first Cleveland administration. He leaves a name for honesty and uprightness of which his family and friends feel justly proud.

Henderson Lawson Kale

Previously served as Private in Company A, 12th Regiment N.C. Troops (2nd Regiment N.C. Volunteers). Transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment on September 14, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on August 5, 1862, by reason of being overage. [May have served later as Private in Company C, 4th Regiment N.C. Senior Reserves.]

Private, Company D 3rd Regiment Georgia. April 24, 1861. Wounded, Malvern Hill, Va. July 1, 1862. Killed, Spotsylvania, Va. March 14, 1864.

David Alberto Hildebran

1842-1911

 

Private, Company D, 6th Regiment, North Carolina Troops.  Enlisted on May 28, 1961; was wounded at Summerville Ford September 16, 1863 and was promoted to First Sargent in 1864. After the war Bert was not only a farmer, mechanic, and sawmill operator, he was also an official for the State of North Carolina in the regulation of government distilleries in the area. Through experience during four years of war he had learned to set broken bones, care for wounds and extract teeth. Hence, he was often called on by his neighbors for help. He went to subscription school at the Old Zoar Lutheran Church. On his father's Plantation he learned to operate the water powered sawmill, shingle mill, and turning Lathe. There on the farm he learned to be a carpenter, blacksmith, a wagon maker, and a mechanic. He seemed to have a knack for repairing the many agricultural machines that were available after the Civil War.

Private March 4, 1862. Appointed 2nd Sergeant. Captured at Vicksburg, Miss. July 4, 1863. Sent to New Orleans, La., where he contracted typhoid fever, in 1863. Died there August 16, 1863.

William Pinkney Speagle

1843-1914

 

Private, Company I, 11th Regiment N. C. Troops; resided in Catawba County and enlisted in Lincoln County at age 18, March 15. 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right-shoulder at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Reported absent wounded or absent on detail through February, 1865. Captured in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865 and paroled at Richmond on or about April 22, 1865.

Sidney Leander Yount

1841-1899

 

Sergeant, Company A, 12th Regiment North Carolina Infantry.  Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 20, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant in March-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and present or accounted for until wounded in the left arm at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May S, 1863. Left arm amputated. Reported absent wounded until discharged on or about January 29, 1864, by reason of disability.

Joshua Butler Little

1821-1908

 

Captain, Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment North Carolina.  Enlisted as a Captain on 31 October 1861 at the age of 40. Joshua was a farmer in Catawba County, North Carolina. Resigned Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 18 Apr 1862.

Private, Company E 72nd Regiment North Carolina Volunteers.  Born in Catawba County on October 30, 1846. Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting at Camp Vance, near Morganton, at age 17, May 21, 1864, for the war. Hospitalized at Wilmington on July 28, 1864, with remittent bilious fever. Reported absent through August 31, 1864. Returned to duty prior to October 31, 1864. Captured at Fort Fisher on December 25, 1864. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, December 29, 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, December 31, 1864. Transferred to Company E, 3rd Regiment N.C. Junior Reserves, January 3, 1865, while a prisoner of war.
